Rhode Island Reporting Time Pay (Three-Hour Minimum)

active

Rhode Island requires employers to pay employees a minimum of 3 hours of pay at the applicable minimum wage rate when the employee reports to work as scheduled. If the employee is sent home before completing 3 hours of work, the employer must still pay for the full 3 hours. This ensures that employees who make themselves available for scheduled shifts receive a minimum level of compensation.

Exceptions
Weather Emergencies
The reporting time pay requirement may not apply in cases of severe weather or other emergency conditions beyond the employer's control that prevent operations from continuing.

Notes

Rhode Island's 3-hour minimum reporting time pay is consistent with the provision in Massachusetts. The rate is at the minimum wage, which provides a floor, though employees who work the full 3 hours or more are entitled to their regular rate for all hours actually worked. The emergency exception is narrowly construed.
